One example of a book written during the dust bowl is "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. The book was published in 1939 and won a Pulitzer Prize. It is a fictional story about a migrant farming family who travels from Oklahoma to California after their farm was destroyed in the storms in an old truck to look for work. To prepare for writing the book, Steinbeck lived with a farming family and made the journey with them to make the book as real as possible. The book shows how the dust bowl affected many families and the struggle farmers went through during this terrible period. When people read it, they understood what farmers were going through. We chose this book as an artifact because it demonstrates the struggles of the farmers during the Great Depression.
